It will come as no great surprise that Golfing holidays are one of the many reasons holiday makers head to the Algarve at every opportunity - the climate is conducive to all-year-round golf and the landscape lends itself unquestionably well to the sport.
The Golden Triangle region boasts so many courses that golfers are absolutely spoilt for choice, several of which are championship standard, and the number is constantly climbing. Pinheiros Altos, Quinta do Lago and Villa Sol, a couple of kilometres west of Dunas Douradas are just three of the superb championship courses in the region. Vale do Lobo itself is noted for its spectacular Royal and Ocean courses and is practically on the villa doorstep.
So, if you are a keen golfer, the Algarve certainly has the sunshine, magnificent scenery and beautifully kept fairways that make up a marvellous golf environment.
Some courses insist on players producing a handicap certificate, but others do not and there are opportunities for players of all abilities, with golf clinics offered by some clubs/courses, aimed both at those wishing to learn and those seeking to improve their game. A number of courses including Vale do Lobo have purpose built driving range for those wishing to blow out those '300yd golf swing' cobwebs before venturing out onto the fairways !

Vale Do Lobo
Royal Course
5 min. drive. New 9 hole course combined with former course including the famous Par 3 16 along the ocean. This hole is one of the most photographed in the world.
Ocean Course
5 min. drive.
Vila Sol
20 minutes drive on the road between Quatro Estrada and Quarteira
Good and challenging course. Has been host of the Portuguese open.
Vilamora Courses
20 minutes Drive to Vilamora. Four 18 holes courses:
- Old Course
Probably one of the best courses in the Algarve (and in Europe) on level with San Lorenzo and Quinta do Lago.
- Pinhal
Less expensive than the Old Course, not too well maintained
- Laguna
A challenging course, offers good value for money. Junior green fees.
- Millenium
A new course (2001), that combines the old blue 9 from Laguna with 9 newly constructed hole
Dress code on golf courses
Please remember that many of the courses in and around Dunas Douradas apply a strict code of conduct and dress code, it is advisable to check if you are unsure, however most courses will accept the following attire.
* Shirts must have collar or polo neck
* Shirts must be tucked into trousers
* Tailored trousers or shorts with belt loops and belt
* Socks
* Golf shoes only, no sandles or trainers
